The Inflammation Hormone Loop You Cannot Ignore
Why your skin, cycle, mood, and weight are connected
If you struggle with chin acne, PMS irritability, bloating, stubborn belly weight, or brain fog, you are likely dealing with one root issue.
Inflammation.
Inflammation drives insulin resistance. Insulin resistance increases androgen production. Elevated androgens worsen acne, facial hair growth, and ovulatory dysfunction.
At the same time, inflammation alters gut integrity. Poor gut function increases estrogen recycling. Excess estrogen contributes to heavy periods, breast tenderness, and mood swings.
Layer chronic stress on top. Elevated cortisol suppresses progesterone. Low progesterone intensifies anxiety, sleep disruption, and premenstrual symptoms.
Now you have a loop.
Insulin, estrogen, cortisol, and inflammatory cytokines feed each other.
From a TCM perspective, this looks like damp heat combined with Liver qi stagnation and Spleen deficiency. Dampness reflects metabolic sluggishness. Heat reflects inflammation. Stagnation reflects impaired flow.
You cannot treat one branch and expect full resolution.
This is why many women feel temporary improvement with surface level solutions. The deeper signaling network remains unchanged.
Here are three labs worth evaluating if you suspect this loop:
Fasting insulin. Optimal levels are typically under 8 µIU per mL, even if glucose appears normal.
C reactive protein. High sensitivity CRP above 1.0 indicates increased inflammatory burden.
Vitamin D. Levels below 40 ng per mL correlate with immune dysregulation and hormone imbalance.
Then address daily inputs.
Eat at least 30 grams of protein per meal. Protein improves satiety and reduces post meal glucose spikes.
Take a 10 minute walk after meals. Studies show post meal movement lowers glucose and insulin levels.
Get morning light within 30 minutes of waking. Light exposure anchors circadian rhythm and improves cortisol timing.
Add acupuncture.
Acupuncture has been shown to reduce inflammatory markers and improve insulin sensitivity in patients with metabolic dysfunction. It increases pelvic blood flow, supports ovulation, and regulates the stress response.
Clinically, I see improvements in acne severity, cycle predictability, PMS intensity, and fertility outcomes when we calm inflammation at the root.
Your skin is not separate from your ovaries. Your mood is not separate from your gut. Your weight is not separate from your stress load.
When we address inflammation, the loop begins to unwind.
If you are experiencing irregular cycles, PCOS symptoms, fertility challenges, or persistent PMS, book a free 15 minute consultation. We will evaluate your patterns and build a treatment plan designed to regulate the entire system, not silence one symptom.
