Comfort Food Makeover: Keely’s Cozy Apple Crisp That Loves You Back
Fall cravings are real—especially when the air turns crisp, the sweaters come out, and your body says, “Give me something warm and cinnamon-scented or else.”
But here’s the beautiful thing: comfort food doesn’t have to mean blood sugar spikes, energy crashes, or sacrificing your health goals. At River Point, we’re all about finding that magical middle ground—where food still feels nostalgic and cozy and it nourishes your body deeply.
Our fabulous Keely has done it again with a gut-friendly, nutrient-dense apple crisp that tastes like fall in a bowl. It’s warm, spiced, buttery (or coconut-oily), and filled with ingredients that love you back.
Keely’s Fall Apple Crisp Recipe (Gluten-Free, Refined Sugar-Free)
Filling
- 5–6 medium apples, chopped
- 1–2 tbsp pure maple syrup
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- ½ tsp ground ginger
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- 1 tbsp oat flour
Topping
- ½ cup rolled oats
- ¼ cup oat flour
- ¼ cup almond flour
- ¼ cup chopped walnuts
- 2 tbsp pumpkin seeds

- 3 tbsp maple syrup
- ½ tsp cinnamon
- 1–2 pinches of sea salt (or as Keely says, “salt from the heart” )
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350°F and grease an 8×8 baking dish.
- In a bowl, mix all filling ingredients. Add to dish.
- In the same bowl, combine topping ingredients. Sprinkle evenly over apples.
- Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden.
- Optional: toast nuts beforehand for deeper flavor.
- Pour a cup of tea, wrap up in a blanket, and let the smell of cinnamon and maple wrap around you like a hug.
Real Food, Real Flavor: The Comfort Food Makeover Mindset
We all have those go-to recipes—the ones we grew up with, crave when we’re stressed, or bring to every fall potluck. But so many of them are heavy on refined sugar, inflammatory oils, or processed ingredients that leave us feeling bloated, foggy, or just blah.
Here’s the good news: you can transform almost any comfort food into a nutrient-dense, gut-friendly superstar—without sacrificing flavor.
Just like Keely did with this apple crisp, all it takes is:
- A little ingredient swap magic
- Some intention
- And a desire to feel better after you eat
Challenge time!
Take a look at one of your fall favorites—maybe your pumpkin muffins, your sweet potato casserole, or even your morning coffee routine. What can you upgrade?
Can you swap:
- White flour for almond or oat flour?
- Sugar for maple syrup or molasses?
- Vegetable oil for butter or coconut oil?
- Add in warming spices or a scoop of collagen?
Need ideas? We’d love to help you build a healing kitchen that still feels indulgent. Just ask next time you’re in the clinic.
Why This Apple Crisp is a Nutritional Rockstar
Let’s break it down:
- Apples = fiber, prebiotics, and gut love
- Oats + flours = slow-burning carbs that stabilize blood sugar
- Nuts and seeds = healthy fats, magnesium, protein, and crunch factor
- Maple syrup = natural sweetener with trace minerals (and that cozy fall flavor!)
- Ginger + cinnamon = warm digestive support from a TCM and Western perspective
This recipe skips refined sugar and inflammatory oils and replaces them with ingredients that support digestion, hormone balance, and energy—without sacrificing flavor.
BONUS: Did You Know Enjoying Your Food Boosts Nutrient Absorption?
Yep, there’s science behind the whole “make a cup of tea and enjoy the smells” step.
When we take time to savor our food, we activate the parasympathetic nervous system—the “rest and digest” mode. This slows down our eating, increases digestive enzyme production, and improves nutrient absorption.
In other words: the more pleasure and mindfulness you bring to your meals, the more your body benefits. 🍽️
So light a candle. Take a breath. Smell the apples. This is medicine, too.
From TCM Perspective: Nourish Your Spleen, Nourish Your Spirit
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, fall is the season of harvest and digestion. It’s also when we lean into grounding foods that tonify the Spleen and Stomach, the organs responsible for transforming food into usable Qi (energy).
This warm, baked apple crisp:
- Supports Spleen Qi with its cooked texture and warming spices
- Grounds emotional energy during seasonal shifts
- Feels like a hug for your digestion and your heart
